Inside Gardena Grödnerhof

Gardena Grödnerhof has grown with one Ortisei family for more than a century. Antonio and Anna Demetz turned a private home into a hotel in 1923, and their grandson Hugo Bernardi now hosts it with his wife Cinzia. A complete rebuild in 2001 reset the house around clean Alpine lines, while timber, garden views and older Tyrolean details keep a sense of place.

Food gives the house much of its rhythm. Gardena Restaurant moves easily from a long breakfast to relaxed regional and Mediterranean dishes. 4 Sajons follows the seasons and local ingredients, while chef Reimund Brunner's intimate Anna Stuben holds a Michelin star and rewards booking ahead. Rooms range from 30-to-34-square-metre doubles to large chalet suites, so couples and families can choose space without losing the feeling of a family-run hotel.

Ski mornings begin with a short walk. The Alpe di Siusi gondola and the pedestrian link towards the Ortisei–Furnes and Furnes–Seceda lifts are both 200 metres away. After skiing, the 17-by-7-metre indoor pool, outdoor whirlpool, saunas and steam baths make recovery feel unhurried. Families also have an evening Kids Club, leaving time for dinner or the spa.

Getting there

A guide to Ortisei

Orientation

Ortisei, also called St. Ulrich in German and Urtijëi in Ladin, is Val Gardena's main village. Its pedestrian centre brings together turn-of-the-century buildings, cafés, shops and churches. Woodcarving has shaped local craft for centuries, with work found in village workshops, churches and Museum Gherdëina.

Skiing

Ortisei has separate lift gateways for Alpe di Siusi and Seceda. The Ortisei–Alpe di Siusi gondola reaches broad plateau terrain, while the Ortisei–Furnes gondola and Furnes–Seceda cable car climb into Val Gardena skiing. From Seceda, the La Longia run descends for more than 10 kilometres towards the village. Check live lift and connection conditions each day.

Food and drink

Cafés and restaurants line Ortisei's pedestrian centre, while mountain huts add long lunches and sunny terraces to ski days. Gardena Grödnerhof has three restaurants of its own, from relaxed regional cooking to the intimate Michelin-starred Anna Stuben. Opening days and seasonal hours vary across the village.
